Homemade Italian Seasoning

Ingredients

• 4 tablespoons dried oregano

• 4 tablespoons dried parsley

• 2 tablespoons dried thyme

• 2 tablespoons dried marjoram (optional)

• 1 tablespoon dried basil

• 4 tablespoons dried oregano

• 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

• 21 tablespoons garlic powder

Instructions

  1. If desired, pulse the herbs in a food processor or spice grinder until they reach your preferred consistency.

2. Mix all ingredients together until evenly combined.

3. Store in an airtight container or canning jar in a cool, dry place.

Storage Tip: A canning jar paired with a jar-top vacuum sealer will help keep moisture out and preserve the flavor of your herbs much longer than simply screwing on a lid.

Make It Your Own

One of the best things about homemade seasoning blends is that you can easily adjust them to your family’s tastes. Don’t be afraid to change the ratios. For example, my husband isn’t a big fan of basil, so I use much less than many traditional Italian seasoning recipes. The recipe above is more “traditional” as most people love basil!

If you love oregano, as you should,  add a little more. Prefer rosemary? Add it in. This recipe is meant to be a starting point, not a rulebook.

Think of it as your family’s signature blend. After a batch or two, you probably won’t even measure anymore. You’ll become one of those people who say, “I just throw some in.” (Whether that’s a blessing or a curse depends on who’s asking.)

Ways to Use Italian Seasoning

Homemade Italian seasoning is one of those pantry staples you’ll reach for again and again. Sprinkle it into:

• Pasta sauces

• Soups and stews

• Pizza sauce

• Garlic bread

• Roasted vegetables

• Marinades

• Meatballs and meatloaf

• Chicken, pork, or beef dishes

• Salad dressings

• Bread dipping oil

It’s also an excellent seasoning for many home canning recipes, including tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes, vegetable soups, and other preserved meals. Since you’re making it yourself, you know exactly what’s in the blend and can easily customize it for each recipe.

 True Garden-to-Table Recipe

This may be one of the easiest garden-to-table recipes you’ll ever make. Nearly every herb in this blend can be grown in a backyard garden, raised bed, or even a few containers on a sunny patio. Harvest the herbs, dry them, and mix up a batch whenever you need it.

There is something especially satisfying about seasoning dinner with herbs you planted, cared for, and harvested yourself. It’s a simple way to enjoy your garden all year long, even after the growing season has ended.

Small Steps. Meaningful Rewards.
