Homemade “Chicken” Bouillon

This is an easy Homemade “Chicken” Bouillon base. Not actual chicken flavor, but it has slowly been replaced by bouillon in the house.  It packs a flavor punch and can be used in so many places instead of chicken or beef bouillon.

Have you ever read the ingredients list on bouillon cubes or powders?! It’s insane! The brand I was using faithfully had more than 24 items, and I couldn’t properly pronounce a lot of them! Plus, who knows what chemicals are used to grow or create those ingredients? Instead, buy or grow healthier herbs and spices, make your own Homemade Bouillon, and know exactly what you’re putting into your food!

Ingredients

  • 5-ounce bag of nutritional yeast (not active yeast for baking)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon sage
  • 1/2 black pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 3/4 teaspoon thyme
  • 3/4 teaspoon rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon celery powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon parsley

**See below for variations & tips & a photo of the nutritional yeast needed

Process Ingredients

Put all ingredients into a food processor or blender and process for 1 minute. This may seem excessive, but you want all of the herbs to break down into pieces as small as possible.

Store in a canning jar

This will fit nicely into a quart jar with room to spare.  Keep in the pantry or on a spice shelf with the lid on to keep moisture out. It will clump up if exposed.

Use to Replace Chicken Bouillon

If you want to make a basic broth using the mix, simply mix 1 tablespoon with a cup of hot or boiling water.

I just use it as a spice, adding it to many dishes or sprinkling it over sautéed veggies. It’s very versatile!

*Tips and tricks

  • You can add 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of salt if you wish. I try to salt each dish to taste, so I avoid it when I can
  • Add 1 tablespoon of cayenne or chili powder to add a bit of spicy flavor
  • If you love the herb flavors, add 50% more or even double it, 1 or more of the herbs! This is the way I typically make mine.
  • Make multiple versions or different dishes and occasions. Just label them “Chicken Bouillon Herb Mix” or “Spicy Chicken Bouillon”.

Make your pantry work for you!
