Don’t have much time to fuss? Sometimes we want a garden. You love the idea of green food or organic vegetables from the yard, but don’t have the time to be out there every day, checking, watering, weeding. With work, kids, life, we don’t all have that sort of extra time. Or maybe you don’t care for the idea of yard work. That’s ok! You’re not alone by any means.

Do what you can, when you can, and plant some low-maintenance herbs. The list below is complete. It’s a list of the more common and valuable items you can easily find at your low store and grow from seed or starter.

These are great for the beginner gardener as well, since they are more tolerant of being ignored while you learn and grow yourself.

Garlic

Garlic is so simple to grow and is one of the most valuable crops you can grow. It’s good in the kitchen and the medicine cabinet. It is also a great pest deterrent against slugs and aphids.  Beware the 9 months it takes to grow! Just plant one in different areas of the garden at a time. You can mark them with a label indicating when they will be mature.

Oregano

Oregano is harder to grow from seeds, but once you get it going, it just keeps giving! Slow grower in heat, but it still doesn’t grow. Like garlic, oregano is excellent in the kitchen and the medicine cabinet. I personally believe it’s one of the most underrated herbs!

Chives

Chives are super easy! They require consistent watering and harvesting to promote new growth and prevent flowering. That means they “cut and come again”…and again…

Mint Family

This includes mint and lemon balm. They can easily take over an area, so keep them in a container. Mint does better out of the sun. You can keep it in a bed or pot that gets partial shade. Other than that, plant it and forget it. Water randomly!

Ginger & Turmeric

Not as common as many of the other plants on the list, however..they should be! They are remarkable healers and should be a staple in every homegrown medicine cabinet. You can buy fresh at the store, pop a piece into a pot or a bed, and BOOM! They both have the same growing cycle and can be planted at the same time, and take about 6 months to mature.

There you have it!

You don’t have to grow them. Just pick one or two that you know you and your family will use regularly. Especially the ones with healing properties that make great tinctures and oils
