Whether you’re lactose intolerant or just thinking about cutting some dairy from your diet, oat milk is an excellent alternative to cow’s milk. For the record, I have no issue using dairy. However, with a Husband who is lactose intolerant and my youngest who isn’t the biggest milk fan, I rarely buy regular milk. It just spoils so quickly! We’ve been using lactose-free milk and oat milk creamer for a while.

Do you see what they are putting in store-bought versions? Weird!!

We find oat milk in coffee creamier than the dairy-based powdered creamer I grew up with in the house.   Whatever your reason, oat milk is super easy to make and takes only minutes. It also eliminates chemicals and unnecessary ingredients. Plus, making your own oat milk will make you feel like a rock star…well…super cool, anyway!

What you need

  • Blender or smoothie cup
  • A fine-mesh strainer or a piece of cloth
  • Storage container with pour spout

I like using my Ninja single-serve cup so that I can pop a lid on it and put it straight into the fridge.

Ingredients

This is to make a relatively small amount. You can easily double or even triple this for a family-size amount.

  • 1/3 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 cup cold water

Optional to make creamer:

  • 1/8 tsp. Vanilla (optional)
  • 1/4 Honey (optional)

Or you can flavor with:

  • Chocolate syrup or Ovaltine
  • Caramel syrup

The flavor options are endless. What do you like? Try it!

How to Make Oat Milk & Creamer

Step 1

Add oats to your blender or a food processor and process for a few seconds. It won’t be powder; just a bit smaller to speed up the whole process.

Step 2

Put oats and water into the blender and process for 20-30 seconds. Using cold water helps prevent milk from becoming slimy.

It will be completely liquified, but you will still see small pieces of the oats in there.

Step 3

Pour through a fine-mesh strainer or piece of cotton cloth (such as an old t-shirt). *I wouldn’t go with cheesecloth on this one. Will need to be a very fine mesh item

Be careful not to push and squeeze the contents through. I know, I know! It’s so tempting, but it can make the milk slimy and yucky. So that’s a no-go!

You can use a spoon to push or scrape the oat mixture to the side to help it drain quickly. Just be careful not to push down.

If using a cloth, cut a piece from an old cotton shirt or similar item and place it over the storage container, letting it hang slightly. Then, secure it with a rubber band or tie a piece of yarn to keep it in place.

Congrats! You have oat milk!

Step 4 (Optional or creamer)

Add the honey or any flavoring you want to make a yummy coffee creamer, then stir. You can also put it back into the blender for a few seconds to really incorporate the honey.

Give it a taste. You may want to add. More vanilla, chocolate, or whatever flavor you like! Just experiment and see what works for you. Start small, a teaspoon or so, and add more from there to achieve the flavor YOU want!!

Pour it into a storage container and pop it into the fridge. Donezo!

That’s it! It’s super simple and so quick! Try it out and cut just a few more chemicals from your diet.

Are you going to make some creamer? What flavors come to mind? Let me know! I’d love to try them!!
